A Beginner’s Guide to Golf Equipment

If you have decided to participate in the game of golf, many would say you have made a good choice. Golf is a game that tests skill as well as patience. To begin playing golf, you will need some essential equipment. Consider purchasing the following before hitting the green, if you wish to be successful in your new endeavors.

Golf Clubs

Golf clubs are the largest investment you will make when you begin playing golf, but you shouldn’t go overboard in the beginning. Purchase an inexpensive set, or even find a used set, until you are sure you enjoy the game. A typical set of golf clubs consist of a driver, a few woods and irons, a sand wedge, and a putter. Be sure to get club lengths that fit your height well, to avoid poor positioning and hitting.

Golf Balls

There are many different brands of golf balls on the market, each promising to add yards to your strokes. A dozen of the top of the line balls can be upwards of $100, so it is recommended to start out with a much cheaper brand. Inexpensive balls also come in handy when you lose them on the course…which is something you are likely to do in the beginning.

Golf Tees

Golf tees are needed when you begin each hole. To drive the ball down the fairway, rest your ball on a tie at the starting point. Tees are available in wood or plastic, and there isn’t much difference between the two. These items are very inexpensive, so it’s a good idea to keep a few handy in your golf bag.

Golf Bag

A golf bag is essential for you to carry all your golf accessories in. They will hold all your clubs and balls, as well as anything else you choose to lug around the course with you. If you will be carrying your bag throughout the game, you should find a comfortable shoulder strap. However, if you will be using a golf cart, any type of bag will suffice.

Golf Shoes

Specially made golf shoes are highly recommended if you wish to excel in the game. These shoes are fitted with spikes on the soles to prevent slipping in the grass when you swing. They are especially helpful if you golf in the early morning, when dew is still on the ground, or a day or so after a heavy rain. Make sure the shoes fit comfortably, and keep an extra set of spikes handy in case you need to replace them.

Golf Clothing

Special clothing is not necessarily needed for golfing, but many choose casual dress when they go to play. Above all, select an outfit that will allow your arms and hips to move freely during each swing. Also, hats come in handy on bright sunny days. Nothing extravagant is necessary…just a ball cap will do.

Once you have the essential golf equipment, you are ready to try your hand at the sport. Don’t worry about having the best of the best in the beginning. What’s important is you find out if you enjoy the game and want to keep playing before purchasing high dollar clubs and other gadgets.
